Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra – Holiday Pops

The Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Pops featuring Amy Hānaiali’i is a perfect blend of treasured Hawaii music, traditional Christmas carols, a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and contemporary holiday songs.

The 18-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner will fill the stage with song, hula and holiday joy as she joins the HSO for the first time singing songs from her Nā Hōkū award-winning Christmas Album, A Hawaiian Christmas. As a special treat to holiday revelers, Santa will be in the lobby before the performance and during intermission to take photos with families and spread holiday cheer.

Ballet Hawaii – Nutcracker

Ballet Hawaii’s Nutcracker, choreography by Septime Webre with guest artists from New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Carolina Ballet, offers a lavish Hawaiian-themed production accompanied by the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet re-interpreted and set in the 1858 Kingdom of  Hawaii, with the grandeur and elegance of the Hawaiian monarchy and the magic of the Nutcracker!

Audiences can anticipate all the traditional holiday dance performances but with historical characterizations of Washington Place resident Mary Dominis and Hawaii’s beloved Queen Lili‘uokalani. In this production, the flowers are Crown, Hibiscus and Plumeria. The birds are I‘iwi and new island animal performers are introduced, such as the Honu (sacred Hawaiian Turtle).

The toy soldier uniforms are patterned after those of the Royal Guard and the famous Waltz of the Snowflakesplace high upon the slopes of Mauna Kea. It truly is a delight to behold!

A Christmas Eve children’s party held by Mary Dominis at Washington Place in 1858 fired the inspiration of the creative team for this Hawaiian-themed ballet. At that party, Hawaii’s first Christmas tree was lit with candles and Saint Nicholas passed out candies and gifts for all.
